THE WORD CAN TRAIN US

Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it - PROVERBS 22:6

The Bible in our opening scripture says, "Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6). One of the reasons we teach the Word of God is to re-culture us. God's Word is a material for training—it is a material for raising you. The Bible says, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction..." (2 Timothy 3:16). The Word of God is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training. It is a training manual.

What you like, what you delight in, what you count to be pleasurable, and what you take as pleasure—even the things we call pleasure—were taught. If you're not brought up well, you will take the wrong things as pleasure. Pleasure itself is taught.

When you were growing up, when you were much younger, I believe most of us who went to school as kids experienced that when our parents took us to school, we didn't like it the first time. We didn't want to stay there. We cried and followed our parents out. It didn't make sense to us. It wasn't pleasurable. But our parents had to teach us that school is a pleasure.

They taught us to value education so much, that a time came when, if we didn't have anybody to sponsor us, we laboured, worked, and did everything to get money to pay school fees. What happened? We had learned a new pleasure. We had found pleasure in going to school. Somebody taught us that going to school and doing well in school is a delight.

So your pleasure, your delight, your fulfillment can be what you were taught. What you count as fulfillment, what you count as enjoyment, is what they taught you. If you grow up and don't like God or the things of God, it's the way you were trained. It's not because God designed you not to like Him—somebody has taught you pleasure wrongly.

Anybody ever punished you—told to pick pin or do frog jump? You did it unhappily. Yet, those same things people called punishment, others now pay to do at the gym. Why? Because someone taught them that being physically fit brings pleasure; their mind was re-cultured to see differently.

What you call pleasure is what somebody taught you to see as pleasure. Who trained you? By what material were you trained? What are your values? What do you count as value in life? The Bible says, "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word" (Psalm 119:9).

The best training material in the world is the Word of God. Let the Word of God culture you. Let God's Word teach you what is valuable. Let God's Word teach you what pleasure really is. Through the Word, your mind is renewed and your life is transformed every day.

Confession & Prayer

"Dear Father, thank You for Your Word that trains and cultures me in righteousness. I yield my heart completely to Your Word. Let it form in me the right values, desires, and pleasures according to Your perfect will. I declare that through Your Word, I am fully equipped to live a life that pleases You, in Jesus' name. Amen."
