LOVE GOD, NOT MINISTRY

...for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart - 1 SAMUEL 16:7

David told Solomon, “And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts...” (1 Chronicles 28:9). His instruction was clear—if you want to win in life, it's not about what men can see. People may notice that you go to church, serve faithfully, or even hold a pastoral position, but that's not what God looks at. The Bible says, “…for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

It's possible to be a pastor and still be far from God. Many preach and hold a microphone, yet their hearts are not truly fixed on Him. Their focus may be on positions, recognition, or survival. While people see outward dedication, God discerns the true motives of the heart.

Some serve in ministry as a means of survival, not out of love for God. They preach, organize programs, and serve faithfully—but not because they love Him. Jesus described such people, saying, “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; But their heart is far from me” (Matthew 15:8). When this happens, ministry becomes a profession instead of an expression of love.

Similarly, someone can be passionate about ministry just as another is passionate about business, politics, banking, or sports. For some, ministry has simply become another passion. But God is not ministry. You can love ministry and still not truly love God.

Loving God is different—it means desiring Him, not what you do for Him. It means your affection for Him remains even if you never hold a microphone again. That's what Jesus meant when He asked Peter “Do you love me more than these?” (John 21:15).

Those who truly love God don't seek the spotlight. They'd rather serve quietly if that pleases Him. Their satisfaction comes from knowing that God is pleased with their heart. As the Lord said, “I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings” (Jeremiah 17:10). God values motive above activity.

Pause and ask yourself: Do you truly love God, or do you just love ministry? Let your service flow from intimacy, not performance. Love Him beyond your calling, beyond your title, and beyond what people see. Make Him your greatest desire and the reason behind everything you do.

When you love God truly, everything else aligns naturally. You'll serve with joy, give with passion, and your ministry will overflow from that love—not from obligation. The Bible says, “and whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;” (Colossians 3:23).

Confession & Prayer

"Father, help me to distinguish between loving You and merely loving ministry. Let my heart be fully Yours—not my works or position. Teach me to desire You above all else. I choose to love You truly and serve from that love, in Jesus' name. Amen."
