Before Jesus came, every human was on their way to Hell, not because of anything we did personally, but because of Adam's sin. You did not become a sinner because of your own sins—you became a sinner because of Adam. The Bible says, "...by one man's disobedience many were made sinners..." (Romans 5:19). From birth every man on Earth is dead spiritually; cut away from God.
Now, a sinner is someone with the nature of the fallen man, Adam. Adam was alive spiritually when God created him. But God told Adam, "...in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die" (Genesis 2:17)—he was not referring to physical death but to spiritual death, which is separation from God. Before sin, Adam was a man of the Spirit...alive spiritually. Adam named all the animals, and his names were accurate because of this connection. But when Adam sinned, his spirit was cut off from God. From him came the natural man we have today, who now gets information from what they see and hear—“seeing is believing”—instead of from the spirit. People say, “I'm broke,” or “I am sick,” based on what they feel, not what their spirit tells them.
The moment your mother gave birth to you, you qualified for Hell fire without committing any sin. David said, “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; And in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalm 51:5). That's why Jesus came and died your death. He went to Hell for you. The Bible says, “by which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;” (1 Peter 3:19). When Jesus died on the cross, He didn't go to Heaven immediately. God forsook Him when all our sins were laid on Him.
At that moment, Jesus Himself died spiritually.
Jesus, like Adam, died two deaths—spiritually death first, then physically. On the cross, when God turned His back, Jesus cried, “...My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). The greatest pain He endured was the separation from the Father. He died the death of a sinner in our place. Then and only then could He die physically.
Every human being is spiritually dead, which is why men are not sensitive to God. People don't see God or hear His voice—they were born that way.
However, the moment a man receives Jesus and is born again, his spirit, being dead since birth, comes alive with the life of God. His spirit is imparted with the life of God. The Bible says, “...whosoever believeth in him ...have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Being born again does not mean going to church; it means receiving eternal life—the very life of God into your spirit. Then your spirit comes alive, reconnecting with God. Your salvation was not cheap—it cost Jesus His life. He went to Hell for your sake so you might receive God's life and live forever with Him. Cherish it, feed it with the Word, and live every day conscious of what He did for you, because it was for your sake He died and rose again.
