Most people's hunger for self-development is very low. For some, it's not because they don't want to grow, but because they don't know the key. They want to be successful, yet they lack the understanding of what drives true success. God has told us that the renewal of your mind will transform your life. He says, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind..." (Romans 12:2).
So, as you think about this, you must ask yourself: "why am I not hungry?" Learning begins with a desire to gain knowledge—and that involves reading. If you are too lazy to read, you are missing one of the most important habits, and you have a long way to go in life. Perhaps you don't even recognize the habits that shape your life. You may think you are running your life, but in reality, the habits you have developed over the years are running your life for you. Not reading a book is a habit—a bad one. You have many habits that may be harming your progress without you realizing it.
Humans are creatures of habits. Habits run your life. There are people who have developed reading habits—they cannot go a day without reading a book. Ask yourself: what are the things in your life that you do daily and have become part of your character? If there's really none, your life is being regulated by your feelings. Even the good things you do are often done only when you feel like doing them. That is not a habit—it is not automatic. True habits are repeated, intentional actions that guide your life. The Bible says, "The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; And the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge" (Proverbs 18:15). So be intentional about getting knowledge.
Look at the successful traits you have developed consciously. Those who have built the biggest organizations and ministries—do you think it's just prayer? Their success is also in the level of their mind—the hours of reading, learning, and investing in knowledge. If you try to use primary school knowledge to pass university-level challenges, your growth will be limited. Reflect on the last five years: what have you learned? Can't you see that growth in your mind precedes growth in your life and ministry? The Bible says, "Blessed is he that readeth..." (Revelation 1:3). Filling your mind with knowledge, and most importantly the Word of God, transforms your life. So take a step today—pick up a book, learn something new, and build the habit. As you renew your mind daily, your life will rise with it.
