Man is a spirit. When he is born again, he receives the life and nature of God into his spirit. The changes that are later observed in his character and behaviour are actually activated from his spirit. This is why God wants you to cultivate and develop your spirit because it is only through your spirit you can make contact with Him and have fellowship with spiritual realities.

One of the primary reasons you must develop your spirit is the fact that God leads and guides you from within you - in your spirit. This is what our opening scripture is talking about: “The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, Searching all the inward parts of the belly” (Proverbs 20:27). This is of paramount importance. There are people who are always wondering and asking questions as to whether or not God wants them to take certain steps, or make certain decisions. But the Bible says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14). You see, God’s children are led by the Spirit of God that’s within them. It did not say we should be led by prophets or whatever. Now, there is nothing wrong with a man of God giving you a prophetic utterance by the Spirit, but the primary way God leads all His children is by the Holy Spirit through their own spirit. Whatever a man of God or a prophet of God tells you by the Spirit of God, must be in conformity with what the Spirit is saying within you. It could be that you weren’t really sure if it was God talking. Understand that the Spirit of God is one, for the Bible says, “…God is not the author of confusion, but of peace…” (1 Corinthians 14:33).

So no matter what anybody tells you by the Spirit of God, if you have the same Spirit within you, there must be of necessity a witness in your spirit that God is leading or speaking to you, because God's children are led and guided by the Spirit of God within their spirit. The Bible says, “The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, Searching [or browsing] all the inward parts of the belly” (Proverbs 20:27), and “…as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14). “What if I don't have a witness in my spirit about what so and-so tells me?”, you may ask. It's very simple - dump it, it's just trash. Be careful of how you accept, “Thus says the Lord” or who tells you what God said about His plans and purpose for your life.
