When we talk about serving God, we are talking about your heart. As a child of God, God needs your heart. He said, “My son, give me thine heart…” (Proverbs 23:26). You can be a child of God, yet God may not have your heart. Your heart is important because that’s where true worship begins.
What is your heart? Your heart means your emotions. Heart represents the deepest part of your personality—your thoughts and feelings. Anything that your thoughts and emotions are not part of, your heart is not in. When it comes to serving God, your emotions must be involved.
Jesus said, “…Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37). That shows that loving God is not just an act of duty; it is a heartfelt relationship. Love involves emotions. When you read your Bible often, the thoughts of God begin to rub off on your mind, and before long, you start having genuine feelings for Him.
Now, this doesn’t mean romantic feelings. Feelings go beyond romance. They include anger, joy, excitement, and passion. Look at David—he was angry when he saw Goliath mocking God. His anger rose because of his love for God. That is what it means to be emotionally connected to God. If nothing about God ever stirs your emotions—if you never feel joy, anger, or zeal for Him—it means your heart is far from Him.
Jesus spoke about this in Matthew 15:8: “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me”. Many people worship God with their lips, but their hearts are not in it. They sing, “I worship You with all my heart,” yet the song does not move them. They say, “I love You, Lord,” but they do not feel what they are saying. True worship must come from the heart—it must touch you deeply.
God wants your heart. He wants His presence and His Word to have such an impression on your personality that your emotions respond to Him. If you have never cried out of love or deep reverence for God, it may mean your heart has grown cold. Cry out to Him today. Ask Him to help you love Him with all your heart.
True worship is not just about the words you say or the songs you sing—it is about how much of your heart is in it. Let your worship be real. Let it come from within. When your heart is fully given to God, your life becomes a fragrance of worship that pleases Him.
