When you start growing spiritually, you begin to develop a spiritual sense. There is a way people who know you will notice the change. Many values and aspects of your life change naturally. Some relationships may also change, which is a sign of spiritual growth. As you grow, not everybody will grow with you. You may notice old friends leaving because they no longer share your perspective. But as you grow, you will make new friends who are also growing spiritually, because the Bible says, "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" (Amos 3:3). If your relationships never change, it shows that you are not growing.
Growth is important. A time will come when people will notice your love for God and your commitment to Him. People who would have casually invited you to an event will eventually respect your priorities because they see your seriousness. The Bible encourages this example; it says, "Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity" (1 Timothy 4:12).
There is a commitment you must have toward God. People around you should respect your values and what you stand for. There are things you should not negotiate—your spiritual walk is non-negotiable. For example, attending Sunday gatherings consistently should show your seriousness and spiritual understanding.
Take Jesus as an example. At age twelve, His parents were searching for Him, and when they found Him, He did not apologize. They asked, "…Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing" (Luke 2:48), and He replied, "...How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?" (Luke 2:49). At twelve, Jesus knew His purpose and made spiritual decisions independently. If you have not developed the understanding to make spiritual decisions for yourself, something is lacking. You must learn to stand firm in your convictions, even if others disagree.
Grow to the point where your spiritual maturity influences those around you. God has called you to guide others spiritually, as the Bible says, "...exhort one another daily..." (Hebrews 3:13). Let your love for God be evident to everyone around you. Hold on to your values, be the light in your home and among your friends, and let everyone who knows you testify that you are truly about your Father's business.
