God is real; He is more real than the person sitting next to you. But not many have come into that reality—where you relate with God every day, He guides you, you hear His voice, and He talks to you. That reality is the difference between Christianity and religion. Religion is man's way of looking for God; the best way to define religion is man looking for God. Christianity, however, is God coming to man; God reached out to men through Christ.
Yet, there are Christians who are also into 'Christian religion'—many all over the world who just go to church but don't have a real experience with God. That is not what Jesus died for. Jesus died for us to have a real, everyday experience with God where we feel His presence. God is not just far away in Heaven; the God you serve lives in you. The very God Almighty who made Heaven and Earth lives in you, for you must realize that "...greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4).
So how do we move from religion into real Christianity, where we have a daily experience with God? It is the Word of God. The Word brings us in. You need that real experience with God, where He is no longer far away but at home in you. As the Scripture says, "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth" (John 17:17).
The word "sanctify" means to set apart. What God uses to separate us from the rest of the world and make us holy is His Word. To sanctify means to purify, consecrate, and set apart for Himself. It is in this place of separation that you discover the mystery: "...Christ in you, the hope of glory:" (Colossians 1:27). When you understand that you are His temple, you stop searching for Him in the distance and start finding Him within. Settle it in your heart today that you are set apart, and walk in the constant consciousness of His indwelling presence.
