The primary way God leads His children is through what's called the inward witness. I believe in medicine; after going through medical school, there is what's known as "general practice" before a doctor specializes. What I'm sharing with you now is the "general practice" of every believer who has the Holy Spirit. Before you are an apostle or a prophet—before you specialize or go further in your calling—you must know this one thing. Have you ever met someone who doesn't really know what being "born again" means? You ask, "What does it mean to be born again?" and he says, "I don't know". But you ask, "Are you born again?" and he says, "Yeah, I think so". When asked how he knows, he hesitates, then that 'thing' clicks: "I know, I just know I'm born again". That is exactly what the Bible means when it says, "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:" (Romans 8:16).
This "knowing" applies to every area of your life. The same way you know you are born again, you can know when God is saying yes or no. When God says "no," there is a witness in my spirit. When He says "yes," if I check my spirit, there is a witness. The moment you have a question, switch inside and check. Don't look outside for answers; all our answers are inside. Depend on it—it will save your life. Jesus said, "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth:…" (John 16:13). Don't travel just because you planned to, and don't invest simply because the stakes are low. If you don't know what to do, take time to look inwards. Don't let anyone pressure you to invest. Don't have a "big eye" for the gain. The Bible says, "The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, And he addeth no sorrow with it" (Proverbs 10:22). If God is not in it, the gain will come with sorrow.
Consider Daniel. When a decree was made, he asked for three days, gathered his friends, and prayed. After three days, Daniel knew both the dream of Nebuchadnezzar and its meaning. That was the Old Testament, yet Daniel consulted God without panicking. How much more should we, who have the Holy Spirit living inside us? The Holy Spirit is yours! The Bible calls Him our Helper, "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost... he shall teach you all things..." (John 14:26). Why is there so much stress in your life? Get alone and listen. Guiding you is His work. Look at Joseph; God guided him step by step until His plan was fulfilled.
In this New Testament era, you are not supposed to struggle. Listen inside and follow the witness of the Spirit. Make this your lifestyle: before you move, decide, or agree—check inside. Don't rush. Slow down, pray, and listen. If you depend on the inward witness, you will walk in peace and arrive at God's best.
