You don't need a comedian to make you happy. You don't need good circumstances to be happy. You can be happy all by yourself. Happiness is a choice, and happiness is medicine. The Word already tells us, "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: But a broken spirit drieth the bones" (Proverbs 17:22). Joy is not a reaction; it is a decision. This means it is something you can do at any time. Look at the benefits of laughter-it strengthens your immune system and increases infection-fighting antibodies, hence enhancing resistance to disease. The Bible says, "...the joy of the LORD is your strength" (Nehemiah 8:10). When you laugh and choose joy, you strengthen your spirit; and when your spirit is strong, your life becomes fruitful and productive.
However, sorrow is a disease. Sometimes you see people looking for money to buy medicine, yet they do not take the one that is free. They refuse to laugh, always frowning and angry. People who are always angry simply squeeze their hearts and their spirits. The Bible says, "A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: But by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken" (Proverbs 15:13). The moment they see someone they dislike, their expression changes. In those moments, you are choosing the quality of your life. Laughter is free, it's cheap, free medicine. Many refuse to take it, but they go around looking for somebody that will give them money to afford a doctor's prescription. The Bible says the kingdom of God is "...righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost" (Romans 14:17). Joy is already available to you. Nobody has the responsibility to make you happy.
Anybody who does not laugh all the time, anybody who does not free themselves of hate, grudge, is in bondage. Forget the past, forget what people have done to you-nobody has the responsibility to make you happy. Just be happy. Train yourself to laugh. Look at the mirror and start laughing. Train yourself to be happy, just be happy. The Bible says, "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true... think on these things" (Philippians 4:8). One easy way to be happy is to focus your mind on positive things. You can't tell me everything about your life is negative. There are positive things in your life you can focus on, and joy will just come.
Today, make a decision. Stop squeezing your heart. Stop carrying your face. Choose joy. Laugh. Free yourself from hate and grudge. Focus your mind on positive things. Nobody has the responsibility to make you happy. Just be happy. As you practice this daily, you will see that happiness is not far from you—it has been within you all along.
