Jesus, in our opening scripture, says, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). This is one of the greatest invitations ever offered to humanity. As I read it, I wish I had a voice loud enough to shout it to the world. Jesus is saying, "Come unto me. All". Not some, but all who are tired. The word "labour" here signifies struggling. If you are struggling and weary, come to Him, and He will give you rest.
No government in this world can ever make such a claim. Jesus invites anyone who is weary to come. This is a massive, open invitation, yet sadly, many across the world have not responded.
How does He give you this rest? Let's look at the next verse: "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls" (Matthew 11:29). He is teaching us His method. He gives people rest when they take His yoke upon them and learn of Him.
Referring back to verse 28, imagine seeing a flyer or hearing someone with a megaphone announcing that houses in a city like Abuja are for sale for 10,000 naira, or a plot of land for 1,000 naira. If the person was well-dressed and professional, how many would act uninterested?
I know what would happen: you would quietly tell the man to stop announcing it because you wouldn't want anyone else to hear. You would want to discuss it privately, hear everything clearly, and buy your portion first. You would give that offer your keenest interest. That is the same interest I have in this verse, because what it says is monumental. When He says, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," He is saying, "I will end all your struggles in life". He doesn't end the struggles simply by laying hands on you; He says, "Take my yoke upon you". You find rest for your soul by taking His yoke—His work—upon you.
With this rest, you never have to worry about raising wayward children. You are relieved of the heavy burdens of life: the worry of how to provide, how to see your children married, or the stress of your job. All kinds of insecurities wear us out, making life feel too burdensome. But He says, "I will give you rest".
Your rest is in His yoke. Accept His teaching and learn of Him. He is gentle, meek, and lowly in heart. When you learn of Him, the scripture is fulfilled: "Great peace have they which love thy law: And nothing shall offend them" (Psalm 119:165).
Let this not just be something you admire—respond to it. Take His yoke upon you daily, commit yourself to learning of Him, and walk in His ways. That is where your rest is found, and that is how your life is transformed.
